The iconic fashion event, Met Gala, has evolved a lot since its beginning back in 1948. The gala became a media-covered affair in 1972, when former Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland took charge as a special consultant at the Costume Institute. Later, in 1995, Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, took over the charge as a leader and has continued to hold leadership since then. Slowly, under Anna’s leadership, the Met Gala became a global phenomenon where celebrities from all over the world were invited to hit the stage. But do you know the artisans behind the making of the red carpet? The carpet is ordered from Kerala, India. Yes, you heard it right. Read on to learn the origin of the Met Gala carpet, which made the global event so glamorous.
The Met Gala carpet is made in India
While the global icons walk the red carpet, little do people know about the Indian craftsmanship behind the piece on which the stars generally walk. The carpet for the iconic fashion event is manufactured in Alleppey, Kerala. The 63,000-square-foot carpet laid at the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is crafted by Extraweave, a Kerala-based company. This is the third running year where Extraweave, a parent company of Neytt Homes, is manufacturing the iconic fashion carpet.
