An Italian seminar on women and science in Cairo

(ANSA) – IL CAIRO, 25 FEB – Under the title “Science, she says!”, a seminar was held in Cairo organised by the Italian Embassy in Cairo to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) and two milestones in the global journey to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment: the 10th anniversary of IDWGS itself and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted during the 4th World Conference on Women in 1995.
2025 is also a special year for Italy and Egypt in the field of science and technology, as it marks 50 years since the signing of the cooperation agreement between the two countries, implemented through the funding of research projects in shared priority areas, the text recalls. For the three-year period 2024-2026, four collaborative projects, totalling EUR 1.2 million, are currently funded in the areas of water management, agriculture and food technology, materials science, renewable and sustainable energy, and cultural heritage.
The third ‘Science, She Says!’ workshop was organised in collaboration with the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority of Egypt (Stdf). The title of the event was inspired by the award established in 2022 by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which each year recognises a young scientist who has distinguished herself for her outstanding contribution to the advancement of science and technology.
The proceedings, which took place at the Italian Cultural Institute, were opened by the Italian Ambassador to Egypt, Michele Quaroni, who emphasised the liveliness of scientific cooperation between Italy and Egypt, not only through the bilateral cooperation agreement, but also thanks to the more than 40 active collaboration agreements between Italian and Egyptian research institutes and universities. Quaroni also highlighted how women scientists are the protagonists of innovative research and discoveries of great impact, but are still underrepresented in career paths. “Education is the key to increasing and stabilising job opportunities, and greater inclusion of women in science and technology not only allows us to pursue gender equality, but is also a benefit to civil society and the world of work,” Quaroni said.
“The initiative,” said the Scientific Attaché of the Italian Embassy, Domenico De Martinis, “confirms the commitment of the Italian Embassy in Cairo to women’s empowerment, promoting women’s access and participation in science and STEM disciplines. Thanks to the presence of the diplomatic, scientific, institutional, national and international community, the day represented an important opportunity for reflection on actions to be taken in the future’.
