Crew of migrant ship Mare Jonio on trial

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 28 – The preliminary hearings judge (GUP) of the Court of Ragusa Eleonora Schininnà on Wednesday sent all the defendants in the Mare Jonio migrant rescue ship case to trial.
The defendants must answer for the crime of aiding and abetting illegal immigration, aggravated by profiting from it.
In addition to the captain of the ship, Pietro Marrone, Alessandra Metz, legal representative of the shipping company Idra Social Shipping, Giuseppe Caccia, vice-president of the Board of Directors of Idra and expedition leader, Luca Casarini, founder of Mediterranea Saving Humans, and three members of the crew, the doctor Agnese Colpani, the rescuer Fabrizio Gatti and the technician on board, Geogios Apostolopoulos, are on trial.
