El Salvador, a maternal and child health project from Italy

(ANSA) – SAN SALVADOR, 17 MAG – The First Lady of the Republic of El Salvador Gabriela de Bukele and the Italian Ambassador to San Salvador Paolo Emanuele Rozo Sordini inaugurated the new cooperation initiative to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality ‘Birth with Affection’. The initiative is inspired by the Salvadoran law of the same name, promoted by the First Lady’s cabinet as part of the process of transforming the national maternal and child health system in El Salvador.
“We will continue to work hand in hand with the Italian government, our partners and allies to continue to strengthen the capacities of our health personnel and ensure the necessary equipment in our health facilities. Thank you for accompanying us on this mission and sharing our conviction that children deserve to be born with love, because this is everyone’s commitment,” said the First Lady.
The project, funded to the tune of EUR 3.5 million by the Italian government through its Embassy in San Salvador and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), is being implemented by the University of Pavia in close collaboration with the First Lady’s cabinet and the Ministry of Health of El Salvador. The aim of the project is to reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality associated with premature births and congenital malformations. “We want this project to be more than just a technical response. We aspire for it to become an instrument of true transformation, to build a stronger, more humane and just health system, where quality of care is combined with respect for the dignity of every person,” said Ambassador Rozo Sordini.
The initiative will contribute to the training of Salvadoran health professionals through short and long-term internships in Italy. These training programmes will cover key paediatric disciplines such as neuropsychiatry, molecular biology, neonatology, obstetrics, genetics, ophthalmology and gastroenterology, among others.
Ambassador Rozo Sordini emphasised that the project will benefit from the significant contribution of strategic partners, such as the Policlinico San Matteo Hospital in Pavia, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome, which represent Italian excellence in maternal and child research and care.
The event was attended by around 350 people, including numerous dignitaries, including the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí Montoya, the Minister of Education, Mauricio Pineda, the Director of the Salvadoran Agency for International Cooperation, Karla de Palma, and the Director of the AICS Office in San Salvador, Paolo Gallizioli. Also present were representatives of the diplomatic corps and international organisations, health professionals and students.
Subsequently, a congress of high academic relevance was held, bringing together eminent Italian experts from the Italian universities of Pavia and Tor Vergata in Rome, who shared specialist knowledge in the fields of epidemiology, urology and genetics. Closing the event, Ambassador Rozo Sordini expressed: ‘This congress represents a valuable piece of a journey that looks to the future. My wish is that it will be a new opportunity for our countries to generate more synergies, new paths and, above all, new lives welcomed and protected with professionalism and dedication’.
