Italian Open: Alcaraz beats Musetti to reach final

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 16 – Carlos Alcaraz beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 7-6 on Friday to reach the final of the Italian Open men’s singles and end the home fans’ hopes of an all-Italian climax to the Rome tournament.
In the final the Spaniard will face the winner of the other semi between Italy’s world number Jannik Sinner and American Tommy Paul.
Musetti made a nervous start in windy conditions, losing the first game on serve.
He ended up being broken three times in the first set, although he also took one service game off Alcaraz.
After an exchange of breaks at the start of the second set, the Italian took Alcaraz’s serve again and held the advantage for much of the set.
But he surrendered serve when 4-3 up and, having had a warning for destroying his racket in the first set, he had a penalty point imposed on him when he let his frustration show.
Musetti cancelled out a match point on his serve in the last game of the second set, but Alcaraz had too much for him in the decisive tie-break. (ANSA).
