(ANSA) – ROME, MAR 3 – Italy’s chronically packed prisons had a population of 62,132 inmates in February compared to the 46.910 places available, with an average overcrowding rate of 132.4%, according to data released on Monday by the guarantors of the rights of persons deprived of their personal freedom of Lazio and Rome, respectively Stefano Anastasia and Valentina Calderone.
The figures were made public at an event organized by the national conference of guarantors.
The regions with the highest overcrowding rate were Lombardy, Puglia, Veneto and Molise while those with the lowest rate were Sardinia, Trentino Alto Adige and Valle d’Aosta.
The most overcrowded prison in the country with a rate of 214% was San Vittore in Milan, followed by the jails of Foggia and Brescia Canton Mombello.
Rome’s Regina Coeli had a 185% overcrowding rate, the figures also showed.
Guarantors said a reported 54 detainees have died so far this year.
A total of 248 inmates died last year.
Meanwhile, 13 inmates have committed suicide in the first two months of 2025.
A reported 24.6% of the prison population is awaiting trial, according to the data. (ANSA).
