Lawyers, ‘180 detained in Istanbul for 1 May protests’

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, 01 MAG – The Turkish lawyers’ association Chd reported that at least 180 people were detained by security forces in Istanbul for attempting to reach the central Taksim Square on the occasion of May Day, where mass demonstrations were banned and the area was closed off by security forces with barricades. The city centre is armoured and all main streets leading to Taksim have been blocked off by police forces since the morning, while underground and tram stops approaching or passing through the central Beyoglu district have also been closed.
