MAGOMEDOV RETAINS TITLE IN NIGHT OF STARS IN THE GARDEN CITY
Al Ain, United Arab Emirates
UAE Warriors Lightweight Champion Amru Magomedov kept the golden buckle around his waist with an electrifying first-round finish in front of his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov to finish an historic night of action in the legendary oasis cityù
Also supported cageside by teammates, UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev (27-1) and Bellator Lightweight Champion Usman Nurmagomedov (19-0), Magomedov (9-0) made quick work of the challenger from Brazil’s Alex da Silva (24-6) with a series of leg kicks before targeting the body with a liver kick, folding the former UFC fighter and forcing referee Marc Goddard’s stoppage early in the first round.
Despite breaking his foot during the kicking exchanges, Magomedov leapt over the cage to embrace his coach and teammates.
Even though he was stretchered out of the venue, it topped-off a glittering evening of success for Team Nurmagomedov, with all of their seven athletes competing on the card emerging victorious.
In the co-main event, Palestine’s Rany Saadeh (15-4) and Japan’s Hikaru Yoshino (13-6) engaged in a technical back-and forth war, with the latter controlling the groundwork though the former caused most of the damage in the standup and it was exactly that which persuaded the judges to award Saadeh the unanimous decision to the visible dismay of Yoshino.
Another nail biting kickboxing match preceded that, in a caspian clash between Dagestan’s Magomed Zaynukov (7-0) and Azerbaijan’s Shakhmar Sadygov (6-1).
It was Zaynukov whose leg kicks and footwork frustrated his opponent, and even though ‘Shango’ kept coming forward, the Russian’s movement proved too elusive and it was Zaynukov who remained undefeated.
Brazil didn’t walk away from the night without some victories however, with Victor ‘Sombra’ Nunes (11-4) looking in top form against the Philippine’s Genil Francisco (14-11) forcing the referee’s stoppage in the first-round with a flurry of unanswered combinations but it was a tough night for Nunes’s compatriot Denis Araujo (23-7) who tapped to Rashid Vagabov (13-2) in the second round in a highly-entertaining grapple-fest to kick-off the main card festivities.
