MEPs say EC must speed up ongoing investigation into X

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 2 – In a letter addressed to the Vice President of the European Commission, Henna Virkkunen, twenty Members of the European Parliament have requested an urgent update on the ongoing investigation into the X platform (formerly Twitter), within the framework of the Digital Services Act (Dsa).
The letter was announced by Sandro Gozi, MEP of Renew Europe and Secretary General of the European Democratic Party, the promoter of the initiative.
On May 1st, it is emphasized, exactly 500 days have passed since the formal opening of the procedure by the Commission.
“A delay of 500 days is increasingly unjustifiable”, write the signatories, highlighting how “every month that passes increases the risk of potential damage, while the absence of a decisive institutional response risks undermining the credibility of the Digital Services Act itself”.
The MEPs, whose signatories also include Brando Benifei, rapporteur of the AI ;;Act, Pierfrancesco Maran and Sandro Ruotolo, express deep concern about the documented cases of algorithmic bias in favor of far-right content and posts attributable to the owner of the platform, Elon Musk, as well as the numerous episodes of political disinformation that have involved Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Romania.
The letter, the note continues, calls for clear answers from the Commission on five key areas of the DSA, including algorithmic transparency, independent verification and the timing of the investigation.
“The credibility of the European Union is at stake. We cannot allow institutional inertia to empty a fundamental tool for the protection of the European digital space”, said Gozi. (ANSA).
