(ANSA) – ROME, MAR 26 – Italy thinks troops should only be sent to Ukraine to police a future ceasefire if they are under the UN banner, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said after a government summit in Rome Wednesday on Thursday’s ‘coalition of the willing’ meeting in Paris.
“Do not send military on missions that are not from the United Nations, it is the only condition for us to send military” to Ukraine, said Tajani, who is also deputy premier, after the summit with Premier Giorgia Meloni, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, and Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.
“The option remains, a sort of NATO art. 5 bis to guarantee European security and to protect Ukraine”.
The “debate is ongoing but we agree, we have spoken about it with the Prime Minister, Deputy Premier Salvini, and Defence Minister Crosetto”. There is “a consensus on the position that the Prime Minister will take” in Paris, said Tajani.
Tajani is leader of the centre-right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party, the junior partner in the government along with senior partner Brothers of Italy (FdI), Meloni’s rightwing group, and the other junior partner, Salvini’s rightwing League party. (ANSA).
