Oklahoma Governor Signs FIND Act
Recently, Governor Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma signed the FIND (Firearm Industry Non-Discrimination) Act into law. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), which serves as the Firearm Industry Trade Association, hosts events such as SHOT Show, and is the backer of the FIND Act, applauds the Governor. This bill addresses banks’ discriminatory practices against members of the firearm industry. The signing of SB 500 prohibits state agencies and local government entities from contracting with corporations that discriminate against the firearm industry. In recent years, partners in the firearm industry have faced discriminatory behaviors from banks and other online service providers such as Shopify.
Darren LaSorte, NSSF’s Director of Government Relations – State Affairs, applauded the passing of the law, “Governor Stitt delivered on his promise that Oklahoma would only do business with entities that respect the lawful commerce of arms in the Sooner State. By signing the FIND Act, Governor Stitt is signaling to our industry that Oklahoma is now a place where firearm industry members are welcomed with open arms.” The FIND Act now requires all large corporations seeking contracts valued at $100,000 or greater with the state and its municipalities to certify that they hold no discriminatory policies against firearms industry businesses. Contracts certified but later found to be in breach of the FIND Act will be subject to cancellation.
Oklahoma joins ten other states that have enacted FIND Act laws to prevent corporate discrimination. The states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming. In January of this year, Rep. Jack Bergman of Missouri introduced H.R. 45 – FIND Act in the House, while Sen. Steve Daines of Montana introduced S. 137 – FIND Act in the Senate. Progress has yet to be made on a national level.
