Request to furlough 3,926 steelworkers after Taranto fire

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 13 – The commissioners running the troubled former ILVA-Acciaierie d’Italia (AdI) steelworks in Taranto told trade unions on Tuesday that they have requested to furlough 3,926 workers after one of the plants furnaces was impounded by prosecutors following a major fire on May 7.
It said 3,538 workers at the Taranto plant were being furloughed as well as employees at the group’s facilities in Genoa (178), Novi Ligure (165) and Racconigi (45).
The steelworks, which has over 8,000 employees, was put into special administration by the government last year and declared insolvent after the multinational ArcelorMittal’s term as the majority stakeholder ended acrimoniously.
The plant has been the subject of legal battles over its impact on the environment and on local people’s health for many years.
In 2019, the European Court of Human Rights found that the steelworks had a significant negative impact on the environment and the health of local residents.
Previous owners the Riva family were convicted of causing higher than normal cancer rates in Taranto, especially among children.
The commissioners in charge of the steelworks have started negotiations for its sale to an Azerbaijani consortium led by the Baku Steel Company (BSC). (ANSA).
