(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 21 – The Italian national rugby team will meet in L’Aquila starting June 14th to prepare for the 2025 summer tour, which includes three matches in southern Africa, with Namibia in Windhoek on June 27th, and with South Africa on July 5th in Pretoria and July 12th in Port Elizabeth.
Coach Gonzalo Quesada has called up 33 players for the meeting, including seven debutants.
“The management of the athletes and the desire to give opportunities to some young players are the fundamental aspects that we have taken into account, with the technical staff, in the choice. “There are players who have played a lot in the last two seasons: we have taken into account their recovery – said Quesada, explaining the absence of some big names, from captain Michele Lamaro to star back Ange Capuozzo.
“The tour will be an important opportunity for some to compete at this level, as well as a reward for the commitment shown in the season.
“The staff on the tour will have the opportunity to work with a group made up of a mix of young and experienced athletes – adds the coach -. Next season will be very important, the last before the World Cup: we aim to have a general idea of ;;who we can involve towards the World Cup and try to increase the depth of the squad available”.
Among the debutants is the Colomiers hooker Pablo Dimcheff, who has maternal grandparents of Calabrian origin.
David Odiase, a new signing for Zebre who was part of the Italian team in the 2024 summer tour, and Giovanni Montemauri are back.
Mirko Belloni, a three-quarter for Rovigo, is called up for the first time after being invited to take part in the Six Nations camps.
