Over the weekend, USC defensive line coach Eric Henderson reportedly interviewed with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. On Wednesday, it was reported that Henderson will indeed be departing the Trojans for the NFL—but not Dallas.
Per Pete Nakos of On3, Henderson is instead headed to fellow NFC East team the Washington Commanders. He will reportedly serve as the team’s defensive line coach under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
Henderson has served as USC’s defensive line coach, co-defensive coordinator, and run game coordinator for the past two seasons. Prior to that, he spent five seasons as the DL coach for the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams.
During his tenure with the Trojans, Henderson drew notable praise for the job that he did both on the field and on the recruiting trail. Hence, his departure is certainly a notable loss for USC.
Now, head coach Lincoln Riley and new defensive coordinator Gary Patterson are tasked with finding Henderson’s replacement. It will be interesting to see where they go with the search, and if they look to someone from Patterson’s coaching tree or simply chase the best coach available.
