Alstom, a world-renowned pioneer in smart and sustainable transportation, has clinched the top honor in the “Digitalization” category at the prestigious Assolombarda Awards 2025. The award recognizes Alstom’s innovative approach to digital solutions through its Control Room project at the Sesto San Giovanni (MI) plant, which has revolutionized railway maintenance. The award ceremony took place on March 13 at Assolombarda’s headquarters in Milan.
The Assolombarda Awards celebrate the achievements of businesses that stand out in strategic areas such as design, sustainability, digitalization, social responsibility, and economic performance. The “Digitalization” category specifically honors companies that excel in creating digital solutions, with an emphasis on cybersecurity and the integration of innovation throughout the value chain.
Alstom’s Control Room at the Sesto San Giovanni site is a prime example of digitalization in the railway industry, serving as a benchmark for the monitoring and optimization of railway maintenance. The facility utilizes Big Data and Business Analytics to provide real-time monitoring of the health status of approximately 500 trains, including regional, high-speed, and locomotive fleets. This cutting-edge approach has dramatically reduced failures, optimized maintenance schedules, and enhanced fleet availability, ensuring passengers experience the highest safety and comfort standards.
At the heart of the Control Room’s operations is predictive data analysis, using advanced algorithms to detect potential anomalies before they lead to equipment failures. This system significantly improves efficiency, minimizing downtime and contributing to better overall service. Another important aspect of the project is the emphasis on cybersecurity, with robust protocols, encrypted communication networks, and advanced authentication systems in place, all in full compliance with European cyber-resilience regulations.
The Sesto San Giovanni site, a key part of Alstom’s network, is a hub for the production, repair, and maintenance of subsystems and components for rolling stock. The site specializes in designing and producing traction and auxiliary converters for high-speed trains, regional trains, trams, and metros, as well as control desks and fire protection systems for various types of trains. It also provides repair services for electronic systems and railway subsystems and acts as a major supplier of spare parts for the entire range of rolling stock.
One of the site’s most innovative features is its 3D printing hub, which is dedicated to producing spare parts for the railway sector. Equipped with advanced polymer printing technologies and tools for reverse engineering, the hub is at the forefront of spare parts production, making it an essential resource for global railway operators.
This recognition at the Assolombarda Awards is a testament to Alstom’s ongoing commitment to innovation and its efforts to drive digital transformation in the railway industry. By continually advancing technology and fostering collaboration across its network, the Sesto San Giovanni site is not only enhancing the maintenance and safety of trains but also strengthening Alstom’s position in the global market.
Through its cutting-edge technologies and comprehensive solutions, Alstom continues to lead the way in shaping the future of sustainable mobility and digital transformation in the transportation sector.
