Athletics: Jacobs pulls out of Rome and Madrid

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 18 – Marcell Jacobs has pulled out of Rome’s Sprint festival Friday and the June 26-29 European teams event in Madrid after a disappointing seasonal debt in Turku in which the double Tokyo Olympic champ clocked 10.30 in the heats and 10.44 to finish last in the 100m final.
The double date had been seen as an important step towards the end of summer world championships in Tokyo for the 30-year-old El Paso-born sprinter.
And so the event in the Italian capital is cancelled (the press conference of the event was also cancelled since Jacobs was the protagonist, a sort of one man show).
The 100 in Turku have in fact “highlighted the need to remodel the program for this start of the season: after having fully recovered from the injury suffered at the end of March, it is necessary to complete the training work to face the next appointments at the maximum level of athletic preparation”, the organizers of the Roman event announced.
At the same time, the renunciation of the old European Cup, which will see 50 Italians competing in the Spanish capital, has also arrived.
Fidal itself has announced that the Olympic champion will not be part of the expedition and in the next few days the technical direction will define the new starter for the 100 meters.
In the group called by technical director Antonio La Torre, two years after Italy’s first victory in the event hosted in Chorzow, the three Paris Olympic medalists have been selected: the 10,000 silver medalist Nadia Battocletti (in Madrid in the 5,000), four-time European champion in the last twelve months, and the bronze medalists of the Games Mattia Furlani (long jump) and Andy Diaz (triple jump), both gold medalists at the Indoor World Championships in Nanjing.
As for Diaz, his actual participation will be assessed next week based on the final check on his physical condition.
The team includes the Tokyo Olympic gold medalists alongside Jacobs in the 100m relay: Filippo Tortu, Lorenzo Patta, Fausto Desalu.
Eight reigning European individual champions have been called up: in addition to Battocletti and Diaz, Yeman Crippa (here in the 5000), Leonardo Fabbri (shot put), Lorenzo Simonelli (110m hurdles) and Sara Fantini (hammer), all gold in Rome, and the continental indoor queens of Apeldoorn Larissa Iapichino (long jump) and Zaynab Dosso (in action in the 100m and 4x100m).
The ‘road to Tokyo’, as Jacobs himself had defined it when thinking about the World Athletics Championships in September, in such an evocative city (the Olympic gold took its colour there) for the Brescian who trains in the USA, appears to be an open construction site. (ANSA).
