Rugby: Test Match; Namibia-Italy 6-73 (2)

(ANSA) – CAPE TOWN, 27 GIU – The Italian national rugby team beat Namibia 73-6 in the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek, capital of the southern African country. Today’s match can be considered a ‘warm-up’ in view of the matches on 5 and 12 July, when Italrugby will face the world champions, the South African Springboks, who are celebrating 30 years since winning their first world title, with celebratory jerseys. The two matches between the Springboks and the Azzurri will also mark an occasion in which ‘Sistema Italia in South Africa’ (Embassy, Consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town, ICE Agency) will organise activities on the sidelines to involve the Italian community and businesses and to strengthen the friendship between Italy and South Africa under the banner of sport.
Today, Italy took the lead after three minutes of play when a penalty try was conceded that led to the expulsion of Namibia hooker Louis van der Westhuizen. Flying halfback Tiaan Swanepoel kicked two penalties to reduce the gap to just one point (6-7) in the 15th minute, but from there on the home team did not score again. Once in control, Italians Trulla, centre Leonardo Marin, wing Simone Gesi and winger Tommaso Menoncello all crossed the try-line by the end of the first half. Scrum-half Giacomo Da Re scored four of the five conversion kicks to give Italy a 40-6 lead at half-time.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the dominant hosts adding goals. Italy completed the scoring with another penalty try. Da Re kicked two more conversions in the second half and Varney one: the national team was ready for the Springboks.
