(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 5 – Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday chaired a meeting at her office at Palazzo Chigi with the bosses of Italian defence groups and of other companies involved in defence investments.
Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani and Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero were among the participants.
Meloni held the meeting to start discussion on boosting defence investments, including via the use of instruments such as the EU’s new SAFE facility loan facility, and taking advantage of the escape clause that allows national to make invest in the sector without affecting the Stability and Growth Pact, sources said.
Meloni said investments should be focused on areas that can also have a return “on the civilian level” and that are “compatible” with those made by Italy’s European partners (ANSA).
