(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 3 – The nephew of the internationally recognised prime minister of western Libya met the son of eastern Libya’s strongman in Rome on Tuesday in a bid towards national reconciliation, Libyan sources said Wednesday, confirming a report in la Repubblica daily.
In the important meeting for the future of Libya, the nephew of Tripolitania’s Prime Minister, Ibrahim Dbeibah, met with Saddam Haftar, son and heir of the leader of Cyrenaica, General Khalifa Haftar.
The meeting, late Tuesday morning, comes three years after the meeting in Abu Dhabi between Khalifa Haftar and Ibrahim Dbeibah, the only internationally recognized official.
The two “emissaries” also met Tuesday with US Special Envoy Massad Boulos, who went on to meet with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in Rome Wednesday.
The latter meeting, the Farnesina said, focused on the stability of the Mediterranean and the Middle East in light of recent developments in the region.
Specifically, Tajani reaffirmed the strategic importance of Libya for European and international security and confirmed the desire to strengthen cooperation with countries of departure and transit in North Africa and the Sahel to combat irregular migration and human trafficking.
Expressing support for the roadmap presented to the Security Council by UN Special Representative Tetteh, Tajani and Boulos agreed to meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September.
Tajani then addressed the situation in Gaza, emphasizing their joint commitment to an immediate ceasefire in the Strip and the release of all hostages.
Following his meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Aghabekian in recent days, the Minister reiterated that Italy and the United States share common priorities and objectives to end hostilities, strengthen humanitarian assistance, and relaunch political dialogue toward a two-state solution.
Regarding Lebanon, Tajani emphasized the importance of the country’s stability and the stabilization efforts of UNIFIL, whose mandate was recently renewed, and condemned the serious attacks by Israeli forces on UN peacekeepers.
These issues will also be addressed during the Mediterranean Dialogues to be held in Naples from October 15 to 17, 2025, to which Special Envoy Boulos has been invited.
Tajani and Boulos finally confirmed the need to ensure stability in the Horn of Africa and agreed on the importance of working within the framework of the Mattei Plan to consolidate the strategic partnership with Africa.
