In 1995, I was playing in a band at a bar in Versailles, Missouri. During breaks, we would step out onto the back porch for fresh air, which overlooked an alley. Across the alley stood an old, boarded-up building with broken basement windows. Behind the glass, I spotted a tiny calico kitten.

For three months, I coaxed her by placing canned cat food a little closer to me each visit. Eventually, my patience paid off, and I earned her trust. I was finally able to get her into a carrier and take her home. I named her Peanut.
She was very scared at first but quickly became attached to me. She would ride tucked tightly in the pocket of my Carhartt coat.
We later moved to Michigan and then to Florida, and Peanut never left my side for 19 years. I miss her every day. Near my computer, I keep a plaque with her picture that reads, “When tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re far apart, because every time you think of me, I’m right there in your heart.”
