One day, a cute gray kitty found her way into my lap in my yard. Every day after that, she showed up at my house for a visit. It did not take long for me to realize she was skin and bones and carrying kittens.
I gave her food and water, and she gobbled it down quickly. I have a big male cat named Mister, and the two of them would stare at each other through the door every day. I used to tell Mister that his girlfriend was here to visit, which is how she got the name Girlfriend.

As time went on, her starvation became worse as the kittens grew. She was still constantly hungry, so I made her mine. The next day, I made an appointment with my vet to find out what I needed to do for her.
She barely weighed 7 pounds. My vet explained that shelters in Utah were already overflowing with cats. Then she got into the very specific and heartbreaking details of how this sweet, severely underweight cat would deliver kittens and likely not be able to keep up with what they needed after they were born.

Feeling terrible about it, with tears in my eyes, I decided to have her spayed. By then, our attachment to each other had already become something amazing. My vet was wonderful and charged me only half price for the spay, and I also had her microchipped. When I picked up our new addition to the household, she weighed just over 2 pounds.
I am happy to say I have now had her for about two years. She weighs about 7.5 pounds, she and Mister chase each other around the house, and she and I have an unbelievable bond. I love my little Girlfriend. She has brought so much joy to my life.
