Michael is back on top at the domestic box office with a cool $26 million in its fourth weekend, and a staggering $700 million worldwide.

In its fourth week, Michael is back in the top slot at the domestic box office with an impressive $26 million in its fourth weekend. It has outpaced The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II, and horror film Obsession.

The Lionsgate film has generated a strong $283 million in North America and a whopping $703.8 million globally—ranking as the highest-grossing musical biopic in North America. While Michael is ahead of the Queen biopic, 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, on the domestic front ($216 million), it still has a way to go to beat its worldwide box office number at $911 million. However, it’s already well on its way.

Michael is also only the second film this year to clear the $700 million mark in worldwide ticket sales, behind only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film has enjoyed an extra boost from its IMAX showings, which contributed around $5.2 million in earnings over the weekend, bringing IMAX’s total contributions for the film to $60 million globally.

But Michael might have its work cut out for it in the next couple of weeks, when Disney’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu drops for Memorial Day weekend. Hollywood and theater operators alike are enthusiastic as they prepare for the summer blockbuster season to get into full swing, with overall ticket sales 16% ahead of last year. That’s thanks in no small part to the success of Michael, as well as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary.

Meanwhile, in other music-related film news, Paramount’s concert film Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) also opened last weekend but only clocked in at #13 in its second weekend. The movie earned only $800,000 from 2,613 theaters in its sophomore week—an unfortunate 88% decline from its $7.5 million start, despite strong reviews. Overall, it’s seen $9.2 million in domestic ticket sales and $25 million globally; the film was produced for $20 million through a partnership between Paramount and Interscope Records.
