<p>With <a href="/howto/guide/how-reduce-food-waste">food waste</a> becoming an increasingly important consideration for both supermarkets and shoppers, we’re pleased to see M&S take another step towards tackling this issue. The retailer has announced a new partnership with the Too Good To Go app, giving surplus bakery treats a second chance, while also helping customers pick up a bargain.</p><p>You can now rescue bakery treats nearing their sell-by date from more than 350 stores across the UK and Ireland. The new Surprise Bags cost £3.80 and contain three or four bakery items worth a minimum of £10.20. So, if you’re lucky enough to secure one, you could come away with pastries, cookies, bread or other freshly baked favourites for considerably less than their usual price – a saving of at least £6.40.</p><h2 id="whats-inside-the-ms-surprise-bags-2223549a">What’s inside the M&S Surprise Bags?</h2><p>This is where the fun – and the element of mystery – comes in. The exact contents will depend on what remains unsold in each store that day, meaning you won’t be able to choose specific products in advance.</p><p>That could mean a bag of buttery pastries for breakfast, a loaf of bread for the freezer and a few sweet treats for the tin. Or perhaps you’ll find the perfect afternoon tea selection waiting inside. We like the idea of letting the bakery counter decide what’s for supper.</p><p>The bags will be available from Monday to Saturday, with collection taking place one hour before your local store closes. You’ll need to reserve and pay through the Too Good To Go app, then collect your order during the allocated time slot.</p><p>The partnership is being rolled out across 354 M&S stores following a trial at selected branches. We’ve heard that demand is already sky high, with the discounted bags selling out by 5am in some areas. Of course, these are expected to be particularly appealing to shoppers looking for quality food at a lower price, and we expect that availability may improve in the next few weeks.</p>

<h2 id="what-is-too-good-to-go-1f2b4bc9">What is Too Good To Go?</h2><p>If you’ve not used it before, <a href="https://www.toogoodtogo.com/en-gb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Too Good To Go</a> is a highly popular app that connects customers with restaurants, cafés, shops and supermarkets with food left over at the end of the day. Businesses can sell this surplus rather than binning it, while customers get a bargain and the contents remain a surprise.</p><p>The app now has more than 120 million registered users and 200,000 partners across 20 countries, making it one of the biggest platforms for rescuing unsold food.</p><h2 id="how-does-this-fit-into-mss-food-waste-plans-e370e76a">How does this fit into M&S’s food waste plans?</h2><p>The launch forms part of M&S Food’s Plan A commitment to halve food waste by 2030. The retailer recently announced that it has redistributed more than 57,000 tonnes of surplus food, equivalent to over 130 million meals donated to charities through its partnership with Neighbourly.</p><p>M&S also reduces prices on unsold food, sells extra-ripe bananas at a discount and turns surplus bread into frozen garlic bread. Its latest partnership offers another practical way for edible bakery products to make it onto a dinner plate.</p><h2 id="how-to-get-a-bag-before-they-sell-out-6ef5305e">How to get a bag before they sell out</h2><p>As we’ve seen so far, these Surprise Bags can disappear quickly, so if one appears, you may need to move fast.
