Christmas planning can officially begin. From today, 22 September, you can pick up M&S’ festive Food to Order magazine in store, browse the range and place your order online or do so in store. The food will then be delivered ready to cook between 22 and 24 December, meaning one less thing to worry about during the busiest week of the year.

For the first time, you can also pair your online food order with M&S’ specially selected wines, with bottles starting from £35 and chosen to complement the Christmas centrepieces. The idea is to offer a one-stop approach: decide on the main event, add a pudding and wine, then let someone else handle the complicated logistics. It also avoids the hassle of fighting your way down the supermarket aisles in the Christmas run-up, only to find your intended item has sold out.

When it comes to the food offering, there’s plenty of tempting options that blend classic nostalgia with modern flavour twists. The standout main for me is the Collection beef fillet wellington. A whole kilogram of beef fillet is wrapped in mushroom duxelles and all-butter pastry, so all you need to do on Christmas Day is heat it through and slice into the golden crust. At £100, it is a highly luxurious (and pricey) option for four, but it will give you that restaurant-worthy result without spending your pre-Christmas prep searing beef and making pastry.

For a larger gathering, the Collection beef rump roast with duxelles butter (£65) serves six and is matured for 21 days before being finished with porcini, black pepper and a rich mushroom butter – if that’s not lavish enough, I don’t know what is!

Turkey fans are also in for a treat. The UK-reared Oakham turkey crown on the bone with Italian chestnut, pancetta and Calabrian orange stuffing costs £70, serves six to seven and brings a distinctly Italian twist to the traditional roast. It’s topped with oak-smoked bacon and finished with an orange glaze, duck-fat butter and candied citrus in the stuffing.

There are also several enticing alternatives to please anyone looking for a meat-free option or keen to move beyond the usual roast. The impressive veggie butternut squash, brie and caramelised onion wellington (£22) serves four, while the slow-cooked venison and portobello, mushroom pie (£55) serves six and is made with British venison, smoked bacon, mushrooms and cabernet sauvignon sauce. A creamy chicken, bacon and leek slab pie (£35) offers another crowd-friendly option.

Seafood lovers can opt for the lobster, king prawn and scallop thermidor en croutes (£30) served in smart ramekins, with all-butter pastry, a creamy brandy-rich sauce and plenty of luxurious seafood.

M&S has also gone big on festive desserts. The Collection Snow Much Fun dessert (£25) is a charming chocolate mousse cabin with a salted caramel centre, white chocolate mousse and tiny penguin decorations. It sounds playful enough for children but indulgent enough for adults.

For something lighter and zingier, the passion fruit and white chocolate yule log (£15.50) combines passion fruit purée with creamy white chocolate. I’m already adding this one to my wishlist – I’d serve it chilled, perhaps with a little extra cream or a sharp berry compote to balance the sweetness.

The wider Food to Order collection also includes plenty of gifting and decoration choices. Festive wreaths and garlands range from £55 to £90, while celebrity-backed bouquets start at £75 and reach £100.

For gifting, the hampers range from £20 for a sweet treats box to £100 for the Luxury Collection Christmas hamper. I’m particularly drawn to the £35 clemencello and panettone hamper, which pairs a bottle of M&S’ new clementine liqueur with three mini panettones, making it a more affordable yet still luxurious gift.

With the order window now open, I’d recommend browsing early and making a note of any favourites. The best Christmas centrepieces tend not to hang around.

For more festive shopping inspiration, check out M&S’ general Christmas food launch earlier this month, along with the equivalent releases from Waitrose, Morrisons and Tesco.
