A ‘red bench’ at the Italian Embassy in Afghanistan

(ANSA) – ROMA, 04 MAG – The red bench at the Italian Embassy in Kabul, now operating from Doha, was inaugurated by the secretary general of the Farnesina, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, in the presence of Ambassador Sabrina Ugolini and the office staff.
The initiative responds to the project – strongly desired by the Vice-President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani – to place a red bench at all Italian diplomatic representations abroad, as a symbol of the void left in society when a woman falls victim to feminicide, but also as a visible testimony of the fight against gender discrimination.
As Minister Tajani himself recently recalled, ‘we must sit on those benches and support women against violence and all forms of discrimination, starting with Afghanistan’.
A red bench is particularly relevant in the Afghan context, where women and girls are daily victims of serious violations of their rights and freedoms.
