Air India Group’s monumental merger with Vistara marks a revolutionary milestone, creating a unified global airline delivering superior connectivity and travel experiences.

The Air India Group has achieved a landmark milestone with the successful operational integration and legal merger of Air India and Vistara. This development signifies a major step in the Tata Group’s vision of creating a world-class aviation brand under its ongoing five-year transformation program, Vihaan.AI. Alongside this merger, the consolidation of Air India Express and AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) earlier this year strengthens the Group’s strategy to offer both full-service and low-cost airline options.

This transformation marks a turning point in the aviation industry in India, combining the strengths of four Tata-owned airlines into one cohesive operation. With the completion of these mergers, the Air India Group has redefined its operational structure to cater to over 8,300 weekly flights across 312 routes, serving more than 100 domestic and international destinations with an impressive fleet of 300 aircraft.

Vihaan.AI: Transforming Indian Aviation

Vihaan.AI is the cornerstone of the Air India Group’s transformation. The program focuses on creating a world-class global airline with an Indian heart. As part of this initiative, the merger of Air India and Vistara was meticulously planned and executed over two years. The integration included harmonizing operations, consolidating vendor contracts, modernizing IT platforms, and streamlining customer services.

With the full-service merger now complete, the unified Air India has expanded its weekly flight operations to over 5,600 flights connecting 90+ destinations worldwide. Through its codeshare and interline agreements with over 75 international partners, Air India offers extended connectivity to 800+ global destinations, ensuring a seamless travel experience for its passengers.

Seamless Transition of Operations

The complexity of merging two full-service carriers required meticulous planning and execution. Over 6,000 staff members from Vistara have been integrated into Air India’s workforce, enhancing its operational capabilities. Additionally, the Group undertook:

  • Migration of 270,000 customer bookings from Vistara systems to Air India’s platform.
  • Consolidation of over 4,000 vendor contracts to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Integration of 4.5 million Club Vistara loyalty accounts into the newly revamped Air India frequent flyer program, now known as Maharaja Club.

Air India’s leadership emphasized customer experience during the merger, ensuring a seamless transition for passengers and employees alike.

Expansion and Modernization Initiatives

The Vihaan.AI program extends beyond operational integration. Air India has committed to acquiring over 500 new aircraft, many of which have already joined the fleet. The Group is also investing USD 400 million in retrofitting interiors of legacy aircraft to match modern standards.

Additionally, a new 600,000 square feet training facility with the capacity to train 2,000 employees daily has been inaugurated. The construction of a 12-bay maintenance base, set to be operational by early 2026, underscores Air India’s commitment to long-term growth and operational excellence.

Global Partnerships and Support

Throughout the integration process, Air India maintained close collaboration with India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The merger also received support from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and multiple international regulators, highlighting the global significance of this milestone.

Singapore Airlines, which previously held a 49% stake in Vistara, now holds a 25.1% share in the unified Air India Group, reflecting the collaboration between Indian and global aviation leaders.

Enhanced Connectivity and Customer Experience

The unified Air India promises unparalleled connectivity and customer experience. Passengers now benefit from:

  1. Over 120,000 daily passengers served by Air India’s extensive network.
  2. Access to global destinations through enhanced interline and codeshare partnerships.
  3. A modernized loyalty program, Maharaja Club, which replaces Vistara’s Club Vistara.

Post-merger, Vistara’s fleet will operate under Air India with distinct four-digit flight numbers beginning with “2”. This ensures continuity while aligning with Air India’s broader operational framework.

Commitment to Excellence

Campbell Wilson, Managing Director & CEO of Air India, emphasized the significance of this achievement:

Campbell Wilson, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Air India, said, “The merger of Air India and Vistara completes the consolidation and restructuring phase of the Air India Group’s post privatisation transformation journey, and is thus a significant milestone. Over the past two years, teams across the four airlines have worked closely together and with other stakeholders to ensure that the transition of people, assets, operations and, most importantly, customers, was as seamless as possible. Given the scale and scope of this project and its unprecedented nature, I would like to acknowledge the support received from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and others in making this merger possible. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our staff, who have undertaken this task whilst also driving comprehensive transformation across the business and supporting the induction of over 100 additional aircraft to the operating fleet. Finally, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for the support and encouragement of our customers, for whom all the effort is ultimately intended, and to re-emphasise our commitment to creating a world-class global airline with an Indian heart.”

Wilson acknowledged the collaborative efforts of employees, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies in ensuring a seamless integration process.

The Road Ahead for Air India Group

The consolidation marks the culmination of two years of rigorous planning and execution but is only the beginning of Air India’s growth story. With a modernized fleet, extensive global connectivity, and ongoing transformation initiatives, Air India is poised to redefine air travel standards.

As part of its transformation, Air India aims to further enhance its service quality, expand its route network, and strengthen its position as a leading global airline representing India on the world stage.

The merger of Air India and Vistara is a transformative step that consolidates the strengths of Tata Group’s aviation ventures. Under the Vihaan.AI program, the unified Air India Group is set to deliver a world-class flying experience, ensuring operational excellence and customer satisfaction.

This merger not only signifies a new era for Indian aviation but also cements Air India’s role as a global aviation leader with an Indian heart.
