At-Risk Shelter Dogs Waiting for One-Way Ticket to Freedom

At-Risk Shelter Dogs Waiting for One-Way Ticket to Freedom

A new year means new beginnings, and with your support we will give dozens of at-risk shelter dogs at overcrowded shelters a second chance on this month’s Flight to Freedom.

On January 13, dozens of dogs from overwhelmed shelters in Louisiana and Alabama will receive a one-way ticket to New Jersey to find a forever home.

Some of the passengers are also asymptomatic heartworm-positive dogs who will get treatment in their new shelters before being adopted.

Meet some of the passengers below.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a laid-back Labrador/golden retriever mix. While she enjoys being around humans, she loves being around other dogs. Her favorite part of the day is play group time where she gets to sniff, play, and interact with other dogs.

Her current shelter told us, “She thrives around other dogs, showing a social, upbeat energy that makes her a joy to be around.”

She is asymptomatic heartworm positive and has begun treatment that will continue when she arrives at her new shelter in New Jersey.

The shelter said, “With treatment on track and her personality shining through, she’s ready for what comes next—a stable routine, continued healing, and the chance to settle into a home where she can keep being herself.”

Lady is a young beagle mix who is looking for someone to love. She is also heartworm positive and will continue treatment in New Jersey.

Her caretakers shared, “Lady moves through each day with quiet confidence and a lot of love to give. Her favorite place is close to her people. Lady will happily climb into your lap, lean in, and settle into a snuggle, making it clear she’s most content when she feels connected. She seeks out affection and gives it back freely, offering calm companionship and warmth in return.”

She is ready to find her person. The shelter said her story is a reminder, “that with the right care and opportunity, dogs like her can continue forward with resilience, connection, and hope.”

Maxwell is a friendly German shepherd mix who was surrendered due to no fault of his own. He is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm disease and will continue his care in New Jersey.

His caretakers are sure he will steal someone’s heart soon and said, “He’s easy to handle, enjoys human attention, and builds connections quickly. While he gets along well with other dogs, it’s people who really capture his heart—and a good game with a ball never hurts. Toss one his way and you’ll see his enthusiasm shine. Maxwell’s story reflects the importance of meeting dogs with understanding and giving them the support they need to move forward. With treatment underway and his warm personality leading the way, he’s ready for stability, engagement, and a home that sees his full potential.”

Ranger

Ranger is a Labrador mix who is the definition of friendly with a tail that never stops wagging. Just like the others, he is receiving treatment for heartworm disease and will finish his care in New Jersey.

This happy fella is ready to find a forever home that will take him on adventures and love him unconditionally. His sending shelter said, “Ranger walks well on a leash and brings a calm, cooperative energy to outings. He already knows his basics—sit, shake, down, and fetch—and he enjoys having a job to do, especially when treats or praise are part of the picture. Water toys are a favorite, giving him a chance to channel his playful side. Easy to connect with and eager to engage, Ranger balances joy and focus in a way that makes him a pleasure to be around.”
