Dr. Martin is the best, actually!
And you’ll come to know it when you check into Port Wenn for Best Medicine, which is precisely what the doctor and network television ordered.
Seriously, Best Medicine is poised to be one of the warmest, most delightful, and most charming additions to the upcoming broadcast lineup. And if you don’t believe us, FOX has dropped a full trailer that does all the convincing for you.

Based on the British series Doc Martin, Best Medicine is the kind of American adaptation that will delight both fans of the original and newcomers alike.
You can trust that it stays very true to the original series, an homage to all the charm that it brought forward, and it won’t take long for you to fall in love with Port Wenn and its inhabitants, even the apparent curmudgeon Dr. Martin Best.
FOX’s take on this dramedy is a breath of fresh air, as the genre seems all but nonexistent on broadcast these days—a show that brings heart and laughs every bit as much as fun drama and comfort.
And you get a real feel for that in the trailer, as we get quite the warm and quirky welcome to this unique, small Maine coastal town that’s eager to embrace Martin Best, fresh off the heels of a high-ranking job in Boston.
This new position will find him returning home to a place where he spent some time as a youth and confronting some amusing personalities. Our biggest skeptic is none other than Abigail Spencer’s Louisa Glasson.

Our girl is asking the important questions when she inquires why a Big City doctor from Boston would want to take over a practice in a small town like Port Wenn.
“You’re not in the witness protection program, are you?” It’s a legitimate question a board member asks him, and you know what? That’s pretty darn valid given the circumstances.
Martin isn’t exactly putting her at ease about his “interpersonal skills” when he truly seems to believe that all the job requires is that he “Take people who are sick and make them well.”
He tosses in a snarky quip about buying a litter of puppies to pass out, which already gives us our first look at how he may not be starting on the right foot with the residents of Port Wenn, especially Louisa.
The irony of the puppy comment is that he appears to have one following him at one point in the trailer.

There’s no cuter trope than a prickly person who eventually succumbs to a pet that gravitates to them, and I’m going to be eager to see if that’s what happens with the scruffy cutie sniffing around Martin’s ankles.
The residents of Port Wenn give Martin a warm welcome, but he’s not exactly up to their standards (a pie in the face and a middle-schooler name-calling him are strong indicators), nor is he theirs when it comes to personalities.
That is a prescription for disaster for him, but just what the doctor ordered for us!
For starters, he may be a doctor who should know best, but it doesn’t stop the residents from diagnosing themselves mid-session, a personal affront to a professional like Martin.
And the cases?

The trailer already teases entertaining ones, including a young guy talking about how he mysteriously grew “boobs,” some older ladies worried about but visually pleased by a shirtless hiker, and a mother with no qualms about accosting Martin mid-aisle about her son’s bloodied knee.
Some of the most amusing points of the trailer are also the casual nicknames they bestow on Martin, even though he’d prefer to be just “Dr. Best.” The biggest offender is Sheriff Mark Mylow, and Josh Segarra is absolutely hilarious in every bit we see of him in the first look trailer.
He even does a “Doc B” cheer for Martin at some point, and in another, you can see him bear-hugging the guy.
Given the fact that we can anticipate a love triangle between Martin, Louisa, and Mark, it’s already amusing that Mark is angling for a bromance, even if it’s one-sided.
It’s just all part of the charm and overall sense of community in Port Wenn.
While Martin finds the residents “Demanding, irrational, and far too chatty,” they’re also a special community that has a magic to it. Martin may need them more than he lets on.

Louisa doesn’t hesitate to explain the town’s charms and why she loves living there, even if Martin can’t see the forest through the trees just yet, and Martin’s Aunt Sarah can already tell that Martin probably needs Port Wenn and its community more than they need him.
We can hear her telling him, “This place won’t let you hide, and that’s a good thing.”
And we sure as heck can’t argue with that, especially since Aunt Sarah seems pretty badass, and she likely wins all the arguments.
She can already see the town’s charm rubbing off and him maybe even appearing, gasp, happy!
But most importantly, Port Wenn may be one of the few places where he can continue practicing medicine while keeping his secret.

The trailer suggests that Martin is a medical doctor who can’t stand the sight of blood, and his reaction is dizzying, to say the least.
If anything, that proves just why Port Wenn is his home, even if it takes a while for him to realize it.
And there’s a chance for so much more for him there, including romance.
The chemistry between Martin and Louisa is already worth watching in the trailer. But don’t just take our word for it. Check it out in full!
