Travelers from China, France, India, Singapore, Spain, the UK, and the USA are increasingly turning to AI and advanced technology to make their trips smoother and less stressful. According to a new Amadeus report, Generative AI helps save time, provide personalized recommendations, and uncover new destinations, while tools like remote baggage check-in, biometric gateways, and integrated travel apps reduce travel-related anxiety. This shift reflects a growing demand for convenience, confidence, and seamless experiences at every stage of the journey.
For modern travelers, the excitement of exploring new destinations often comes hand-in-hand with the stress and complexities of planning a trip. A groundbreaking global study by Amadeus, Connected Journeys: How Technology Will Transform Travel in the Next Decade, provides new insights into how travelers are increasingly relying on technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), to simplify travel and enhance their overall experience.
The study surveyed 9,500 travelers across major markets including China, France, India, Singapore, Spain, the UK, and the USA, highlighting the evolving expectations of global travelers and the transformative role of emerging technology in the travel and hospitality sectors.
Generative AI Revolutionizing Trip Planning
One of the most striking findings of the research is the growing reliance on Generative AI (Gen AI) for trip planning. Usage of Gen AI has surged by 64% compared to the previous year, reflecting a clear trend toward digital assistance in travel management. Travelers report multiple benefits from these AI tools, including saving significant time (42%), receiving highly personalized recommendations (37%), and discovering new destinations they might not have considered otherwise (36%).
Moreover, the study indicates that travelers who incorporate Gen AI in their planning report feeling more confident in their decisions, with 35% citing improved assurance in their choices. The willingness to invest in AI-based travel solutions is also notable: 64% of respondents would pay for an AI travel assistant capable of providing real-time in-trip information, and 17% indicated they would pay up to five percent of the total trip cost for such services.
Despite the enthusiasm, the study also underscores current limitations. Approximately one-quarter of travelers reported receiving outdated or inaccurate information from AI tools, while another quarter noted that AI often struggles to capture the full range of personal preferences, pointing to areas for continued innovation and improvement.
Anxiety and Aspirations in Modern Travel
Travel anxiety remains a persistent concern, with 90% of air travelers admitting to experiencing some level of stress during their journey. These worries manifest at various stages, from packing (26%) and traveling to the airport (26%) to going through security (27%) and the flight itself (24%). Yet, these anxieties coexist with clear travel aspirations. Rather than focusing on material acquisitions, travelers prioritize meaningful experiences, including spending quality time with loved ones (27%), enjoying local food and drink (25%), and creating lasting memories (24%). Nearly a quarter of respondents (22%) emphasize the importance of a seamless, disruption-free travel experience.
Technology as a Solution to Travel Stress
Given these challenges, travelers are increasingly embracing technology that can alleviate stress and streamline their journey. Remote baggage check-in, which allows luggage to be collected directly from travelers’ homes, is particularly popular, with 66% expressing interest. Similarly, biometric gateways are favored by 69% of respondents, promising smoother airport processing by reducing repetitive document checks.
Other technology solutions are already helping travelers manage anxiety effectively. Real-time travel updates via mobile apps (29%), digital wallets for secure document storage (27%), smart baggage tracking systems (26%), and integrated travel “super apps” providing end-to-end management (26%) are all gaining traction among modern travelers.
The Future of Travel Technology
The findings from Amadeus highlight a clear shift: travelers are not only open to adopting new technologies but actively seek tools that provide convenience, reassurance, and enhanced experiences. From AI-powered trip planning to biometric-enabled airports and home-based baggage services, the future of travel is increasingly digital, personalized, and seamless.
As the travel industry evolves over the next decade, technology will play a central role in redefining what it means to travel confidently, comfortably, and meaningfully. For travelers, the journey is no longer just about the destination—it’s about minimizing stress, maximizing experience, and harnessing the power of technology to make every trip smoother and more memorable.
