Final Day of 34th AIDA Freediving World Championships Sees New DYN World Record and Champions Crowned

The final day of the 34th AIDA Freediving World Championships brought the spotlight to one of the most breathtaking disciplines in competitive freediving: Dynamic with Monofin (DYN). This event challenges athletes to cover the longest possible distance underwater in a single breath, using a monofin for propulsion, a true showcase of techniqueendurance, and mental control. And today, records were not just broken, they were redefined.

Zsófia Törőcsik: Double World Record and Overall Champion
Hungarian freediver Zsófia Törőcsik delivered a historic performance, reaching an astonishing 280 meters underwater on a single breath. This incredible dive not only earned her the gold medal in the DYN discipline, but also marked a new world record. Having already secured another world record and gold medal earlier in the competition, Zsófia closed the championship with 2 golds, 1 silver, and 2 world records, making her the Overall Women’s Champion of the 34th AIDA World Championships.
Still early in her freediving career, Zsófia’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable and the global freediving community is eager to see what’s next from this emerging star.
A Breakthrough Moment for Chinese Taipei
In the men’s DYN competitionKai-Hsiang Chan of Chinese Taipei stunned the audience by swimming a monumental 300 meters, placing him among the few elite freedivers in history to achieve this feat. His consistent dominance across multiple disciplines earned him 2 world champion titles and a silver medal, making him the Overall Men’s Champion. His teammate Po-Yen Lee also delivered strong performances throughout the championship, securing 3rd place overall and contributing to Chinese Taipei’s breakthrough on the international freediving stage. Their success signals a new era for the sport in East Asia, reflecting freediving’s growing global reach and inspiring a wave of new athletes and national teams.
The Molchanova Award and a Look Ahead
During the closing ceremony, the Molchanova Award, named after the late Natalia Molchanova, the most decorated freediver in history, was presented to the overall winners in recognition of their outstanding achievements and embodiment of freediving excellence. This year’s World Championship not only celebrated record-breaking performances, but also emphasized the continued global growth of competitive freediving, with new nations joining the elite ranks and pushing the boundaries of human potential underwater.
