(ANSA) – CAPE TOWN, 20 SET – “Unfortunately, multilateralism has serious weaknesses. We are not giving up this kind of approach, however, we want to suggest some changes of course, particularly on the system of international cooperation.” Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry Francesco Lollobrigida told ANSA at the end of the G20 ministerial meetings on Agriculture and Food Security in Somerset West, South Africa’s agricultural capital.
“The Mattei Plan,” he said again, “is a symbol of the ability to invest in Africa and its potential: Africa today has more than 60 percent of the planet’s arable land. And to invest in young people, who are increasingly lacking in our development areas.” The minister also stressed the importance of promoting projects that foster the growth of local economies and the Italian companies involved, in synergy with African governments.
On the issue of shared rules, Lollobrigida stressed that “efforts must be made to try to adapt the trade system to all new geopolitical events. Reciprocity rules in trade are essential. Sustainable agricultural models should be encouraged, but keeping in mind that in some nations of the world the priority is that of availability of food.” Before arriving in Cape Town, the minister organized a Business Forum in Maputo, Mozambique, as part of the Mattei Plan: “Every time our businesses are presented abroad there is also great interest in cooperating to emulate our model of development to ensure food self-sufficiency, Mozambique has this need as a priority. Italy makes itself available to African nations to work in this direction,” he said.
