(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 1 – Elly Schlein, the leader of the opposition, centre-left Democratic Party (PD), said Monday the EU and the Italian government should stand up for the Global Sumud Flotilla seeking to take humanitarian aid to Gaza after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said the vessels will be seized and people onboard detained and treated like terrorism suspects.
“Israeli Minister Givir’s threats against the activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla must be strongly returned to sender by European governments, by the Italian government and also by the EU,” Schlein told the PD’s Feste dell’Unità festival in Livorno.
“The largest (ever) grass-roots humanitarian mission seeking to break the blockade of humanitarian aid, food, energy and water on the Palestinian people by the criminal government of Netanyahu and his ministers, who openly speak of their intention to wipe out Gaza and Palestine, has begun.
“The only thing illegal in this matter are the crimes of the Netanyahu government. “We will stand by the activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla and we are convinced that the Italian government must take a stand to defend the Italian activists who are on board.” (see related). (ANSA).
