Italy against sanctions on Israel says Tajani

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 23 – Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Monday that Italy disagreed with Spain after Madrid demanded the EU end agreements with Israel and impose sanctions on it at the foreign affairs council in Brussels.
“Our position is different from Spain’s,” Tajani said.
“We think that it is essential to have a dialogue with Israel.
Thanks to this dialogue we managed to get almost 1,000 people out of the (Gaza) Strip.
“We are the only ones who managed to get a UN convoy into Gaza.
“Having open dialogue can lead to results, while unrealistic stances are useless and are perhaps aimed (primarily) at countries’ internal politics.
“Our position is to move forward with Israel on this front too.
“We do not agree with the choices made in Gaza due to the disproportionate reaction, the excessive use of force. It is clear that we are asking for an immediate ceasefire.
“We approved the sanctions against the settlers in the West Bank who violated the rules, yes, but ending the relationship with Israel also means ending the possibility for many Palestinians to be able to leave Gaza”. (ANSA).
