The dog who helped me heal after a terrible car crash was named Baby Face Nelson Cornette.

Left Chained on a Detroit Corner, This Dog Became the Hero Who Saved a Life

Marva Cornette

Nelson was found sitting on a street corner in Detroit with a huge chain still around his neck. Rescuers believe he finally managed to break free from where it had been anchored to the ground, but he stayed there for two days, unsure of where to go next. Mutts of Motown found him and helped nurse him back to health.

For eight years, he was my absolute hero. Nelson passed away in 2017 from prostate cancer, but even then, he tried to protect me — quietly hiding in the back bedroom so he wouldn’t upset me. I carried him to my bed, and when my husband got home, we took him to the vet to give him one final act of kindness. The cancer was terminal.

Nelson was privately cremated, and his ashes now rest in a cherry oak box with his leash and favorite treat inside, his name engraved on the outside. He will never be left behind or forgotten. He was my baby, my hero, and he is worth every tear I still cry for him.
