The NIT team focused on piperlongumine, a compound found in long pepper, and demonstrated through laboratory experiments that it selectively kills colon cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Tests revealed that piperlongumine triggers oxidative stress inside cancer cells, causing them to self-destruct, while normal cells remain unaffected.
