(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 24 – Italy’s penitentiary administration department (DAP) said Wednesday that it has stopped Pavia prison from carrying out a plan to give 720 condoms to inmates as a “therapeutic” measure.
The department said it had not been consulted beforehand and said the initiative posed risks for health, order and security.
It said possible problems regarded “methods of control, the prevention of violent conduct among inmates” and the “possible distorted use of condoms, which could be used to conceal narcotic substances, even through ingestion, thus evading normal controls”. (ANSA).
