Timely nuggets of information and ideas we want to share with you.

For those of us, and there are many, who began doing weight training in our 30s, a recent study will make us want to pat ourselves on our backs.  A new study published in GeroScience found that resistance training twice a week over six months improves verbal memory, and key brain structures that typically shrink if there is cognitive decline.  The participants in this study were adults 55 years and older already showing signs of mild cognitive impairment.

Here are the takeaways:

  • Participants worked at 80% of their maximum capacity.
  • Engaging large muscle groups, especially lower body, increases blood flow and may improve benefits especially supporting ‘white matter integrity’.
  • Resistance training should be considered mandatory, not optional.

I read a review of these super sticky insect catchers that made me rush to buy some.  I have two houseplants plants that attract tiny ants every spring. These should solve my problem.  They work for many different insects indoors or outdoors; they are non-toxic and odorless and are pet and kid safe. Just stick them in the dirt next to your plant, or hang them nearby, or peel the cover off the sticky backing and put them on the pot.  48 pieces for $5.99.

This cleaning paste, The Pink Stuff,  got its start on TikTok.  Its popularity on TikTok created a surge in sales for The Pink Stuff and a new cleaning term – “hinching”, which means to vigorously clean.  The videos on TikTok show its ability to remove stains, grease and grime from various surfaces which increased its popularity even more.  I am not a fan of ‘hinching’ for myself,  but watching the videos of people enthusiastically cleaning things with The Pink Stuff that I’ve ignored for years (like the bottoms of pots?!) is kind of inspiring.  I’m ordering it now. $5.97 for 17.6 oz.

How to Store Lemons

I learned something new when I read about storing lemons. They make a fruit bowl pretty but storing them that way will shorten their lifespan. If you only buy a few lemons at a time and use them quickly, they can stay on the counter in a fruit bowl.  If you buy a bag of lemons and you want to keep them fresh for a long time, they must be refrigerated and sealed in a plastic bag. When stored that way, lemons can last in the fridge for up to a month.
