In 2014, the FCC said a Marriott-run hotel blocked guests’ own Wi-Fi hotspots in its convention space, then pushed them to buy the venue’s Wi-Fi instead. Attendees could get billed about $250 to $1,000 per device, and Marriott paid a $600,000 penalty to settle it.
