‘Agriculture and technology to promote the Country System’

(ANSA) – NAPOLI, 11 SET – “We are in a very important phase of transformation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to make sure that the promotion of Sistema Paese, and first of all economic growth, but I would say in general civil society, its expressions and the production of science, technology and culture, are supported in a systematic, constant and hammering way.” This was emphasized by Foreign Ministry Director General for the Promotion of the Country System Mauro Battocchi as he opened the second day of the Conference of Scientific and Space Attachés and Agricultural Experts, being held at various locations in Naples as part of the celebrations for the 2,500th anniversary of the city’s founding.
With a network of 62 scientific and space attachés and agricultural experts deployed in embassies and representations abroad, the Farnesina oversees the execution of about 60 bilateral agreements on scientific and technological cooperation, confirming the priority of strengthening scientific cooperation with countries with a high rate of innovation and strong growth prospects in the fields of science and technology, with a synergistic action that coordinates the more than 30,000 Italian scientists abroad, ‘ambassadors’ of Italian scientific diplomacy in the world. And every year, the conference is a central moment to strengthen the Farnesina’s growth diplomacy strategy.
Among the focuses of the second day were innovative technologies in agribusiness and space as an opportunity for growth. Opening the proceedings at the Department of Agriculture of the Federico II University, at the Palace of Portici, Battocchi stressed “the importance of the presence of six agricultural experts who are at some embassies and representations,” and in general of “agricultural technologies and food education, from the perspective also of the protection and development of the Country System. We know very well that agriculture and the agro-industrial system are pillars of our economy. And we move in an international context in which the intrinsic values of our agro-industrial system are threatened by policies” that in some cases “have already been implemented in some countries.” In the face of this picture, “it is very important, therefore, that the entire network of scientific attachés be engaged alongside ambassadors, trade offices, and cultural institutes to promote accurate knowledge of the benefits of using a diet based on the principles of the Mediterranean diet.” According to Battocchi, “This is a clear direction from our government and I think it really goes in the interest of protecting the national interest. And of course, this also goes with the reasoning on the technological issue” and “how to develop and direct technologies in a virtuous way, which is one of the issues that will be discussed today.” In the afternoon, the work will continue at the School of Medicine of the Federico II University, and with a session on innovation in biotechnology. The institutional session-which will take place tomorrow at the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory-will include a keynote address by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and the Minister for Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini.
