Alan Tudyk’s New Role Is the Polar Opposite of Resident Alien’s Harry, But You Wouldn’t Wanna Miss It!

If versatility were an Olympic Sport, Alan Tudyk would be its Michael Phelps. With over 114 acting credits to his name, the actor has more range than the electromagnetic spectrum.

From Firefly‘s Wash to Resident Alien‘s Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, Tudyk has played some of the most memorable characters in pop culture history. If Disney’s animated films are your jam, odds are his voice has danced through your ears since 2012.

When Resident Alien was canceled after four seasons, the news broke a lot of hearts. However, Tudyk is back on screen, and this time, he is not playing nice.

Prime Video’s upcoming action comedy, Playdate, stars Reacher‘s Alan Ritchson and Zookeeper star Kevin James. And Alan Tudyk will be hunting them down in the movie as one of its main antagonists.

Sounds like a fun watch, right? Wait till you read about the film’s ridiculous plot.

Prime Video’s Playdate: Reacher Meets The King of Queens

As cheesy as the film’s title sounds, Playdate is nowhere close to it.

It digs into midlife crisis, grabs a handful of your worst nightmares, and launches them straight into something worse!

Kevin James is a master when it comes to playing a down-on-his-luck average Joe.

He is playing a recently unemployed middle-aged accountant, Brian, who becomes a stay-at-home dad.

As he struggles to settle into his somewhat even more mundane life, Alan Ritchson’s Jeff waltzes into the scene.

And we know what happens when Ritchson gets on screen: everything, from a football throw to a fight scene, becomes way more intense.

The unlikely duo gets together for a seemingly normal playdate with their sons, Lucas (Benjamin Pajak) and CJ (Banks Pierce), but it is anything but.

Jeff is not CJ’s dad.

And the playdate begins with pizzas and mascots, and turns into high-speed car chases with covert mercenaries on their tail!

Alan Tudyk’s Simon Maddox will not be making it easy for them. If Doom Patrol‘s Mr. Nobody is anything to go by, we know how terrifying he can be as a villain.

Heading the team pursuing Jeff and CJ, he is prepared to go to any lengths to secure the cargo. Unfortunately, Brian and Lucas unknowingly become part of it, too.

A trailer for Playdate has already been released. The clip’s high-octane action scenes and slapstick humor remind you of classics like Rush Hour and Shanghai Knights.

Will Resident Alien Return for Season 5?

Sadly, the answer is no — at least for now.

In July 2025, Syfy and USA Network confirmed that Resident Alien would end with its fourth season, which wrapped on August 8, 2025.

The cancellation hit fans hard, especially since the quirky sci-fi dramedy had built a loyal following thanks to Alan Tudyk’s unforgettable performance as Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle.

Showrunner Chris Sheridan admitted he had a sense the end was coming. Speaking to TV Fanatic, Sheridan explained, “I had hoped, but I never thought… looking back now, it is, I think, way better than I ever would have dreamed it could have been.”

“You don’t know — you cast it as well as you can, and you hope it’s going to work. And there’s so many challenges that are thrown at you,” he said. “In a way, maybe it’s better in four seasons instead of five, so it doesn’t feel like we’re treading water at all.”

Still, Sheridan hasn’t closed the door completely. In the same interview, he revealed that he’s optimistic about a continuation in some form, maybe an X-Files-esque comedy with Mike and Liv:

“A show where Mike and Liv are somewhere fighting aliens and Bigfoots? Like a comedic X-Files? Exactly right. You’d have to take them out of Patience… I don’t know how Patience exists without Harry Vanderspeigel in it.”

That glimmer of hope has kept fans buzzing about a potential revival, even if it’s not in the form of a traditional fifth season.

For now, though, Resident Alien Season 4 stands as the series’ swan song — a finale that ties up Harry’s arc while leaving just enough mystery to fuel speculation.

Until then, fans can catch Alan Tudyk in a very different role — as the villainous Simon Maddox in Prime Video’s Playdate.

The action-comedy, co-starring Alan Ritchson and Kevin James, premieres November 12, 2025. Don’t miss it: stream it on Prime Video and see Tudyk like you’ve never seen him before.

If you are a fan of quirky shows like Resident Alien, give Murderbot a try.

Or if action-comedy is your jam, put Peacemaker on your watchlist.
