Alstom, a global leader in sustainable and intelligent mobility, introduced the design of its new Coradia Stream single-deck trains for Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) today at the “Tomorrow Mobility World Congress” in Barcelona. Crafted at Alstom’s Santa Perpètua de Mogoda facility near Barcelona, these trains are set to connect the city center with Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, beginning in 2026, marking a milestone in seamless airport transit.
A Tailored Design for Efficient Airport Travel
Specifically designed for high-demand airport routes, the Coradia Stream trains offer expansive luggage storage and wide corridors, enabling easier movement for passengers and accessibility for those with reduced mobility. Featuring state-of-the-art passenger information systems and advanced signaling, the trains prioritize both safety and convenience, creating an enhanced travel experience.
Each five-car train comes equipped with 20 doors—10 on each side—to streamline boarding and accommodate up to 656 passengers, including 209 seats. A unique lighting system, green for opening and red for closing, supports hearing-impaired passengers, along with 20 panoramic screens across the cars to display train and airport information in real time.
Commitment to Accessibility and Universal Design
Designed with inclusivity at the forefront, Alstom collaborated with the ONCE Foundation to integrate features like level boarding, automatic ramps, and designated areas for passengers with limited mobility. The trains include multifunctional spaces for bicycles, strollers, and adapted toilets, all part of a universal design approach to ensure a comfortable journey for every passenger.
Eco-Friendly Engineering for Sustainable Mobility
Aligned with Alstom’s eco-design principles and FGC’s commitment to sustainable transit, these new trains are built with energy-efficient materials and systems, prioritizing recyclability at the end of their life cycle. The Coradia Stream trains contribute to reducing road congestion and CO₂ emissions, reinforcing public transit as a green alternative.
€177 Million Investment for Local Impact
FGC’s €177 million contract with Alstom includes the supply of 10 Coradia Stream trains, alongside a 15-year maintenance plan. Alstom’s establishment of a new maintenance depot in Barcelona further supports the project, enhancing local employment and reinforcing Catalonia’s role as a technology hub.
A Faster Route to the Airport
Launching in 2026, the new service will connect Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia to both terminals of Barcelona-El Prat Airport every 15 minutes, covering the distance in just over 20 minutes. The 22.7-kilometer line will span nine stations, currently under construction, providing efficient, convenient access for commuters and travelers alike.

The Coradia series represents over 30 years of continuous development, with 4,000 units operating across 12 countries. Alstom’s advanced propulsion solutions, including battery and hydrogen options, extend the Coradia’s versatility to non-electrified lines, affirming Alstom’s dedication to sustainable rail innovation.
