(ANSA) – BENTO GONCALVES, 05 MAG – The Italian Ambassador to Brazil, Alessandro Cortese, returned to the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul today, one year after the severe floods of 2024. At the time, Italy had sent over 25 tonnes of basic necessities for the affected populations, with a humanitarian cargo accompanied by the diplomat himself. As proof of Italian solidarity, the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, also visited Porto Alegre in July.
Cortese’s mission, scheduled from 5 to 7 May, includes institutional, economic and cultural appointments. Today, the Ambassador is taking part in the ‘Meeting with Bacchus’ event in Bento Gonçalves, where he was welcomed by Consul General Valerio Caruso and met Mayor Diogo Siqueira. Tomorrow, he will inaugurate the ‘Wine South America’ fair and the ‘Rota dos Capitéis’ tourist route in Monte Belo do Sul.
On 7 May, the Ambassador will be in Porto Alegre for a lunch with entrepreneurs organised by Federasul, the inauguration of the new Comites-RS headquarters, and meetings with the Italian Chamber of Commerce to get to know the new management.
“The visit further strengthens ties with the gauchos, who are deeply attached to Italian culture and traditions,” Cortese said. “What the people of Rio Grande do Sul have experienced must always be remembered and valued. For the strength they have shown, for overcoming their limits in a time of pain, but above all for their courage in getting back up. Now we will experience moments of sharing and important dialogues for the economy and bilateral relations. A page is being turned, without forgetting what has been faced,’ he added.
