Ambassador Buccino Grimaldi’s mission to Merida

(ANSA) – MADRID, 31 LUG – The ambassador of Italy to Spain, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, accompanied by the consul general in Madrid, Spartaco Caldararo, and the first political adviser, Marco Lapadura, went on a mission to Mérida on July 30.
In the capital of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, the ambassador had a cordial meeting with the city’s mayor, Antonio Rodríguez Osuna, to whom he reported the most recent data on the Italian presence in the city, with about 1,000 Italian citizens registered with Aire, the embassy informed in a note. For his part, Mayor Rodríguez Osuna remarked on the Roman roots of Mérida (ancient Augusta Emerita) and the deep rootedness of its citizens in Roman culture.
The city’s ambitious cultural policy was reviewed, which, by virtue of organizing cultural events and festivals throughout the year, has been highly successful, leading to the deseasonalization of tourist flows. The mayor also explained the governance model of Mérida’s Roman archaeological heritage (Roman Theater; Roman Amphitheater and Temple of Diana; Trajan’s Arch and Aqueduct of Los Milagros; Roman Bridge over the Guadiana; National Museum of Roman Art), a Unesco World Heritage Site, entrusted to the Consorcio Ciudad Monumental, in which territorial entities (the Municipality and the Autonomous Community of Extremadura) and the State participate, a model of sustainable development of cultural heritage, with important initiatives in restoration, tourist enjoyment and international collaboration.
The ambassador and mayor likewise dwelt on the exchanges between Mérida and Italy, such as those with Ostia Antica, as well as the many Italian performances that have taken place at the Roman Theater. Buccino Grimaldi expressed keen appreciation for the International Festival of Classical Theater as a bridge of cultural dialogue between Italy and Spain and an opportunity for artistic and academic cooperation between the institutions of the two countries.
Finally, the ambassador met with some parliamentarians from the Autonomous Community of Extremadura to discuss the political and economic framework and ways to further strengthen cooperation.
Italy is now the fourth largest market for Extremadura, which exports about 70 percent of the olive oil produced here, and seventh largest supplier to the Autonomous Community.
After visits to the National Museum of Roman Art and the Monumental Complex, the ambassador attended the premiere of Electra in the evocative setting of the Roman Theater.
