American Express GBT unveils a new emissions-based carbon pricing platform
American Express GBT

American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) has launched a new emissions-based carbon pricing platform aimed at helping businesses reduce their CO2 footprint from corporate travel.

The initiative aligns with global sustainability efforts and enables clients to integrate carbon accountability into their travel management strategies.

The platform allows Amex GBT clients to select from various carbon calculation methodologies, enabling them to apply either a flat or dynamic carbon fee to employee air travel.

These fees are prominently displayed during the booking process and can also appear on travel invoices.

This visibility supports corporate sustainability goals by informing travelers of their carbon impact and encouraging environmentally conscious travel decisions.

According to Amex GBT, the funds generated from carbon fees can be channeled into a self-sustaining fund dedicated to financing sustainability projects.

These initiatives include investments in alternative sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), electric vehicles and ongoing research and development in green technologies.

John Sturino, Senior Vice President of Product and Engineering at Amex GBT, emphasized the potential impact of the platform: “Carbon pricing is a proven mechanism that can help companies progress towards their sustainability objectives.

Our innovative software now allows customers to place a price on carbon and direct investments toward lower-carbon solutions, empowering them to address their carbon footprint more effectively.”

Amex GBT’s platform supports a range of carbon calculation methodologies from credible organizations, including:

IATA’s CO2 Connect

France’s Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME)

The UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (formerly BEIS)

These methodologies offer clients flexibility in determining how to calculate and manage their carbon pricing strategy.

One of the early adopters of this platform is Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical company.

Lucian Alexandru, the company’s Global Procurement Category Head, highlighted the platform’s value: “Emissions-based carbon pricing enables us to combine economics, sustainability, and technology to enhance our business travel program and fund decarbonization initiatives like SAF.”

Nora Lovell Marchant, Vice President of Global Sustainability at Amex GBT, stressed the importance of integrating carbon pricing with broader decarbonization efforts.

“Carbon pricing is imperative but insufficient on its own,” she said. “We need to combine it with initiatives that make clean travel more affordable to drive meaningful change.”

This carbon pricing platform marks a significant step forward in corporate travel sustainability, empowering businesses to make informed decisions while investing in a greener future.
