In 2019, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission established a two-day Veterans and Active-Duty Military Waterfowl Hunt, the first of its kind in the state. For reference, many states provide veterans with benefits such as free or reduced hunting licenses and special season dates. Unfortunately, the two-day season in Arkansas was cut down to a single day in 2024. However, following numerous public comments, the commission reinstated the two-day season. By doing this, the commission aims to boost participation.
On Thursday, May 22, the AGFC unanimously approved a minute order to extend the annual Veterans and Active Duty Military Waterfowl Hunt to two days. The maximum duration allowed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (also known as the Federal Government) for veteran hunts is two days. The dates will be Feb. 7-8, 2026, aligning with the Special Youth Waterfowl Season, which the state hopes will increase participation. Hunting and the outdoors have proven beneficial for veterans coping with post-traumatic stress, and having a season dedicated to them provides the opportunity to hunt alongside others who share similar experiences.
Additionally, the AGFC’s May meeting introduced Doug Schoenrock as the new director. “In my initial interactions with staff in the last three to five days, (they) have shown me that they don’t do this for a job; they do this out of a passion for the resource. I share in that passion, and I’m looking forward to more interactions with this team as we all work together to leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy all that The Natural State has to offer. Friends, thank you. Please get outside, and get outside often.”
The outdoors is a resource we should not take for granted, but learn to enjoy and appreciate. In the state of Arkansas, the AGFC leadership aims to do just that.
