Athens Public Transport Embraces Digital Transformation with Contactless Payment System.

Passengers in Athens are set to experience a digital upgrade in public transport services starting Wednesday, January 15, as the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OASA) launches its new contactless payment system, ‘tap2ride.’ This innovative solution allows commuters to pay their fares effortlessly using a bank card, smartphone, or smartwatch, making travel across buses, trolleys, metro, and trams in the Greek capital more convenient.

The new system, developed in collaboration with the infrastructure and transport ministry, will be officially introduced on Wednesday. While ATH.ENA tickets and ATH.ENA Cards remain in use, ‘tap2ride’ offers a modern alternative, expanding payment options for passengers.

Having undergone a successful pilot phase on the Athens International Airport Express Bus lines (X93, X95, X96, and X97) since April 2024, the system is now ready for citywide implementation. Passengers can simply tap their contactless credit or debit cards at validation machines or ticket barriers, with fares automatically deducted from their accounts.

By adopting this cutting-edge technology, Athens joins major European cities like Madrid, Milan, and London in offering safe, seamless, and user-friendly public transport experiences.

Key advantages for commuters include skipping the need to purchase tickets in advance, the convenience of automatic fare calculation for the best available price based on travel history, and avoiding queues at ticket counters. The introduction of ‘tap2ride’ not only simplifies travel but also promotes greater use of public transportation in the city.
