Barcelona Airport Launches the World’s First AI-Powered Robotic Restaurant
Barcelona Airport

Travellers passing through Barcelona-El Prat Airport (AENA.es) can now experience the future of dining with SELF, the world’s first AI-powered robotic restaurant in an airport.

Located in Terminal 1 near Gate B24, this fully automated eatery, launched by Areas, a global leader in travel hospitality, redefines speed, efficiency, and sustainability in airport dining.

This milestone aligns with Spain’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (España Digital 2026), which promotes smart automation and digital transformation in key industries, including tourism and hospitality.

A Revolutionary Dining Experience

The 137-square-meter robotic restaurant blends artificial intelligence, robotics, and touchless service to create a fast, contactless, and high-quality dining experience. Customers:

  • Place orders via touchscreens.
  • Receive a QR code and order number.
  • Watch as a robotic arm prepares and delivers meals.

SELF is designed to process up to six orders simultaneously, ensuring high efficiency while maintaining freshness and quality. The AI-driven system learns and adapts in real-time, optimizing preparation speed based on demand.

AI and Robotics Powering the Future of Airport Dining

Developed with Spanish innovation, SELF is the result of collaborations with leading robotics and technology firms, including:

  • IJJRobótica, AEV, and KUKA – Robotic automation.
  • ICG – Advanced ordering and payment software.
  • Mastercard – Contactless and secure payment solutions.
  • Mahou San Miguel, Coca-Cola, Lavazza, and Danone – Supplying fresh food, beverages, and premium coffee.

While the restaurant is highly automated, human staff remain available to assist customers, handle special requests, and ensure a smooth dining experience.

Sustainability at the Core

SELF is not just about technology—it also reflects Areas’ “Areas for Change” sustainability strategy, aligning with Spain’s Circular Economy Strategy 2030. The restaurant features:

  • Energy-efficient LED technology to minimize power consumption.
  • FSC-certified paper packaging, which is 100% recyclable.
  • Eco-friendly uniforms, made from organic cotton in partnership with Clothink.

These initiatives reinforce Barcelona Airport’s commitment to becoming a global leader in sustainable aviation under Spain’s Sustainable Tourism Strategy 2030.

Why Barcelona Airport? A Strategic Choice for Innovation

Barcelona Airport, operated by AENA (aena.es), is one of Europe’s busiest airports, handling over 50 million passengers annually. Its strong tech ecosystem and digital innovation policies made it the ideal location to introduce SELF’s AI-driven dining experience.

Sergio Rodríguez, CEO of Areas Iberia, describes SELF as a milestone in travel hospitality, positioning Barcelona Airport as a pioneer in smart airport dining. The company plans to analyze customer feedback and system performance before expanding to other international airports.

The Future of AI-Powered Airport Dining

With contactless experiences, AI-driven efficiency, and eco-friendly operations, SELF sets a new standard for airport restaurants worldwide. As Barcelona leads the way in airport technology and automation, this AI-powered innovation could soon become the new norm in global travel hospitality.
