Baywatch Returns! FOX Is Reviving the Iconic Drama, and I Can’t Wait!

Baywatch Returns! FOX Is Reviving the Iconic Drama, and I Can’t Wait!

Can you hear it? That iconic theme song rolling in with the waves, the red swimsuits cutting across the sand, the promise of action, romance, and yes — slow-motion running. Baywatch is officially making a comeback.

For those of us who grew up with it, Baywatch was more than just a show. It was pure escapism — like playing Barbies on TV, except the dolls dove into the surf, solved wild mysteries, and somehow always found time for a little comedy alongside the rescues.

It was campy, earnest, unforgettable, and made exercising in front of the TV a national pastime.

Now, after years of whispers, FOX is bringing back the world’s most famous lifeguards for a new generation.

I can’t be the only one who feels we are in an era that seems starved for fun, soapy adventure. Seriously, the timing couldn’t be better.

FOX announced today that the iconic lifeguard series will return for the 2026–27 season, with original co-creator Greg Bonann, Michael Berk, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto, and Matt Nix (Burn Notice, The Gifted) executive producing.

Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, said:

“In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status.

Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback… [bringing] the California dream to a whole new generation of fans with fresh stories, rising stars and all the spectacle that make the Baywatch franchise a global sensation.”

Christian Vesper, CEO Global Drama at Fremantle, added:

“Baywatch has always been a treasured asset in Fremantle’s portfolio and remains one of the most iconic series in television history globally.

We have found the perfect partners in Fox to help us maintain this legacy. With Matt Nix at the helm, we are in great hands… Our goal is to reconnect with existing fans while also introducing a new generation to the world of these famous lifeguards.”

Why Now?

It feels like perfect timing. FOX already dipped its toes into the lifeguard drama waters with Rescue: HI-Surf, and while that show didn’t survive beyond a single season, maybe it planted the seed that Baywatch could rise again — with tweaks that lean into nostalgia, soap, and spectacle.

And let’s be honest: Baywatch was never just about lifeguards. The formula leaned on soapy storylines, beachside comedy, and big action rescues all mixed together with impossibly glossy tans.

That combination of melodrama and fun is exactly what today’s fractured TV landscape could use.

Rescue: HI-Surf vs. Baywatch

I can’t help but wonder: why not run both shows back-to-back? Rescue: HI-Surf gave FOX a fresher, more procedural look at the world of lifeguards.

Maybe keeping it alive alongside Baywatch would’ve been overkill.

Or maybe moderate success with HI-Surf showed them that, if viewers would show up for a brand-new lifeguard drama, they’d show up in droves for the brand name.

Where Will It Film?

Word is FOX hopes to film in Los Angeles, but nothing’s locked in. Australia has even been floated as a stand-in, which feels… odd.

Baywatch without the California coastline? Sure, it could work, but part of the franchise’s magic was always the sun-drenched LA vibe.

The California Dream, Reimagined

Whether it’s nostalgia or curiosity that draws you in, Baywatch’s return is bound to make waves.

The show was a global sensation once, and if FOX nails the balance of fresh stories with that over-the-top, earnest charm, it might just be again.

After all, who doesn’t need a little slow-motion beach running back in their lives?

Normally, I am the first person slamming another reboot or revival. But even though the OG was a star-making vehicle for Pamela Anderson, I’m not married to the characters and storylines as much as the concept.

Still, it would be a kick to see her return, even if only for a cameo. Yes, this is the spark of fun my TV schedule needed. I hope it lives up to my expectations.
