We’re all living busier lives, so on-the-go appliances like portable blenders are becoming a staple in more and more households. Rechargeable, cordless and typically much quieter and easier to clean, they have an appeal that standard blenders don’t.

Today’s best models are capable of producing smooth shakes, smoothies and sauces, all while remaining compact enough to slip into a bag, backpack or cup holder.

Whether you’re looking for a travel-friendly blender for weekend trips, a convenient option for the office or just a simple way to make breakfast on the move, there’s now plenty of choice available. And we’ve put a selection of them through their paces to see which are genuinely worth buying.

Tested and reviewed by Gabrielle Sander and Annie Collyer.

Best portable blenders at a glance

JUMP TO REVIEWS

Lightweight and easy to carry, it’s well suited to camping trips or self-catered holidays.

After an initial two-hour charge, it had enough power for 20 sessions. The two settings, smoothie and blender, kept operation straightforward and I found they blitzed through both fresh and frozen ingredients with ease in just 33 seconds. It’s also a particularly quiet machine, so you won’t be waking everyone up when you make your morning smoothie.

The 500ml capacity makes it better suited for single servings like smoothies and dips rather than sauces and soups. I particularly liked the measuring marks on the cup, which made following recipes easier and both the cup and the lid can go in the dishwasher once you’re finished with them.

If you’re often making smoothies early in the morning, this is one of the least disruptive portable blenders I’ve tested.

The soft silicone sleeve provides a comfortable grip and makes it easy to carry, while the compact design feels well suited to commuting, travelling or keeping on your desk at work. It’s altogether only around 500g in weight, but it could be made even lighter if a separate lid was provided, to save carrying around the blade and mechanism.

After two hours of charging, it should have enough power for 11 blends and a single 40-second cycle produced a seriously smooth pizza sauce and a creamy, lump-free frozen berry smoothie – though I did have to stop it halfway through to give it a stir. At 300ml capacity, it’s on the smaller side but perfect for portability.

After an initial two-hour charge, I found it made light work of ingredients and consistently produced smooth sauces and smoothies within its 30-second blending cycle.

Included in the box is a USB-C rechargeable motor base and charging cord, a 530ml blending cup, a sip lid with a handle, a cup cover and a blade cover. The cup and lid are dishwasher-safe and the lid is designed to be leak-proof, so you can pop it in your bag without worry. Not included in the box is a mains plug, so you’ll need to use your own.

I also liked the overall design. It’s slim, robust and attractive without feeling bulky. I’d advise keeping hold of the manual as it contains a useful key for what lights on the blender mean (for example, flashing orange mean the blades are blocked).

The insulated stainless-steel cup can keep drinks cool for up to 24 hours, making it particularly useful for commuting, travel and days outdoors.

I also liked that the blade compartment can be removed and replaced with a dedicated sip lid, making it lighter and more convenient to carry once blending is complete. Operation couldn’t be much simpler: attach the blade lid, flip the blender over and press the button.

While it isn’t the most powerful blender on test, it still whipped up a very smooth pasta sauce and the fact that my smoothie was ice cold to drink was an added benefit. It’s easy to clean too, just add some water and a drop of washing up liquid and blend as normal.

I found it needed a good shake between cycles to help ingredients reach the blades, especially with thicker mixtures. Once I did this, though, it produced consistently smooth results that exceeded my expectations for such a small machine.

The sealed lid makes it easy to carry without worrying about leaks and the dishwasher-safe cup keeps cleaning simple. Battery life was my main reservation. While Nutribullet suggests 15 uses per charge, this depends on what you’ll be blending, as my super berry smoothie nearly drained it of its whole battery.

It’s great for single servings with a 400ml capacity, but I would keep an eye on the battery level before leaving the house to avoid any disappointing picnics.

How to clean your blender

Clean out obvious debris as soon as you can after use. Many models come with dishwasher-friendly components, so pop the cup on the bottom dishwasher drawer with the lid and place any inserts on higher trays or the cutlery basket.

Don’t plunge your hands into soapy water to scrub at the blade attachments – they’re razor sharp, rotate and can be at peculiar angles. Safety first: fill the blender jug halfway with hot water (if suitable for the blender) and the tiniest squirt of washing-up liquid. Now ‘blend’ the mix on full power for a minute or so and rinse thoroughly before leaving upturned on the drainer to dry.

What to make in your blender

I know I spoke a lot about smoothies and sauces in this review – portable blenders are capable of considerably more.
