(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 27 – The city of Bologna has begun distributing 300 crack pipes to smokers users of the drug in a bid to stem illegal crack smoking, sending the Right into an uproar.
The distribution of the pipes, costing some 3,500 euros, is part of a decriminalisation pilot scheme that started in the Emilian capital a year and a half ago.
Premier Giorgia Meloni’s rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party condemned the move.
FdI heavyweight and Lower House deputy speaker Fabio Rampelli said: “It seems like we’ve returned to the experiments of the 1990s, when the Left, preparing the ground for a fluid society eager to manage generations of zombies, refused to eradicate drug addiction by offering free methadone and drug-free rooms as alternatives to therapeutic communities and their mission of rebuilding the personality and spirit of human beings afflicted by the germ of deviance. “What the City of Bologna is doing, by distributing pipes for inhaling crack, is pure nostalgia, clichéd, and a failure.
“The laxity with which drugs have been approached during these decades of torpor has led to an uncontrolled explosion in their use.
“A dramatic scourge that law enforcement is struggling to address, precisely because of the difficulty in prosecuting a phenomenon that a certain progressive culture would even legalize.
“New drugs, old tools, and very old left-wing tools are now trying again with the updated ‘harm reduction’ approach… they provide you with a kit so you don’t have to worry too much.
“Instead of combating this harm, they are thus encouraging it.
“Drugs must be fought without any ifs or buts, especially by a state that calls itself free and democratic.
“There is no freedom in addiction; the Left must understand this concept once and for all.” (ANSA).
